Dress Codes: Unfair or a respect issue?

*weheartit*

Dress codes. Everyone has them, I know I've had one my entire school career. At my school, which I love do not get me wrong, we have a very strict dress code. No short skirts/dresses, no tank tops, no short shorts, ect ect. And that's fine. I'm used to dressing a certain way at school, but it gets hard going back from summer of short dresses to school of jeans (because most dresses just aren't worth trying haha!) And although I stopped fighting the dress code in ninth grade, I'm getting a little tired of it if you want me to be honest.

Tonight I've been thinking a lot about the next step in my life and how I want to go about it. I originally planned to work at Disneyland when I move to the area... but I'm not as sure tonight. I think it'd be a wonderful place to work, however I have had to live under a strict dress code all of my life and am ready to be able to express myself better. I do not expect to be dress code less, however Disneyland is strict... I'm anticipating that my gauges will have to go and I won't be able to get my septum pierced, which is something I've wanted for so long. I just don't know if I want that. College is my time to grow and find who I am... I'm not sure if I want another dress code, one that I will be choosing to be apart of. I'm just unsure at this point. I know I have a lot of time to figure it out, but I want to be really happy next year and I don't know if sacrificing things I've never really been able enjoy is apart of that. (I keep my gauged hidden at school as not to make a fuss of them. I have nude/flesh colored ones on the way)

How do you feel about dress codes? Are they a good idea or do you think they're a complete bummer?

Love and Turtledoves,
Jaco

  1. Hey, new follower here =]

I've got to say, your school's dress code doesn't sound particularly strict - I mean, you got to wear your own clothes, even if there were restrictions. I went to a school where you had to wear uniform, so consider yourself lucky ;)

I, personally, am not too bothered about dress codes since I'm pretty conventional as far as tattoos and piercings go, and having restrictions on clothing makes it far easier for me to decide what to wear!

  2. Hey :)
I love not having a dress code, but I just found out that my school has a rule against tattoos, which totally blows. I understand the reasons for dress codes, but sometimes they seem unfair. In my opinion, as long as its not offensive, it should be allowed. Unfortunately, what is and isn't offensive is a matter of opinion which is why dress codes exist. I think that if you want to work at Disneyland then you should go for it, but I also know how important it is to you to be able to step out of the guidelines your school has set for you. And I know how hard you've worked on your gauges =D. This was a really good post because dress code is always something to be debated and new perspectives are always interesting. Thanks!

  3. you should definitely work at Disneyland if that's what you want! Don't let a dress code stop you! Also, if you get your septum pierced, you can just flip it up and nobody will be able to see it :) that's what I did with mine for a couple years. I actually had to because my parents didn't know and they never saw it! (until I moved out) Also, if not Disneyland there are a lot of places that are very lenient with dress codes. You should check out coffee shops, or little boutiques! And maybe you can sell your stuff there too! I have a very good paying job as a pharmacy technician and I've had every type of facial piercing there, pink, purple, and teal hair and have lots of tattoos and they don't care at all! Some places just don't mind. :) follow your heart girl, and don't let a dress code stop ya!
